In January 2013 brothers-in-law Robert Beckley and David Warren decided to make their dream a reality and open a gastro pub in their home town. They wanted to create a community pub where local people could come at any time of day for a coffee or a pint or a meal — or all three. Serving fantastic food is a priority at The King Stag. Robert is an experienced chef who has worked with top names such as Mike North of the Nut Tree, Chris Barber (ex head chef of the Prince of Wales), Heston Blumenthal and Michel Roux Jr.
Robert was joined by current head chef and 2015 Masterchef contestant Sean Clark when the pub opened.
At The King Stag I make every effort to buy as many of the ingredients as possible for the kitchen within 20 miles. We also use local firms, such as Spar Shots in St Albans, Gibsons in Watford and Woods Food Service. We produce most items on the menu from scratch and we change our menu quarterly with the seasons. The kitchen team and I strive to be inventive and at the moment I’m really proud of our trio of warm beets with olive tapenade and beetroot sorbet.
